Michigan House and Michigan Senate both introduced legislation that would improve implementation of the Earned Sick Time Act

Update from Joshua Lunger Vice President of Government Affairs, Grand Rapids Chamber

This week the Michigan House and Michigan Senate both introduced legislation that would improve implementation of the Earned Sick Time Act.

Although the Senate introducing legislation is significant progress, the House version is preferred and aligned with our focus of:

  • Exempting small businesses from the requirements of the Act.

  • Clarifying which employees are eligible for this benefit.

  • Allowing time to be used in 1-hour increments unless the employer has a different policy.

  • Allowing employers to appropriately manage their absence control policies and deal with abuses.

  • Supporting tipped wage employees by preserving the tipped wage credit.

A lot of negotiations will have to move quickly in the next 43 days, but we are encouraged by the urgency and prioritization of this issue. We expect activity at least in the House next week and will keep you posted as the legislation progresses.

Please feel free to contact us with any questions!

Senate Legislation: Senate Bill 8 (Tipped Wages) | Senate Bill 15 (ESTA)

House Legislation will be formally introduced today, expected to be House Bills 4001 and 4002
